Since its introduction in 1955 Chevrolets, more than 60 million Chevy small-block V-8 engines have been produced. As testimony to the quality of the original small-blocks, the engines produced today are still remarkably similar in size, weight and basic design to the small-block V -8s of the mid-fifties.
The small-block was designed to be smaller and lighter than other V-8s, yet it did not sacrifice its potential for outstanding performance and power. In fact, the Mouse Motor has long been a favorite among serious racers, street machine builders and tiresmoking hot rodders.
While most Chevy small-block V-8s provide power for Chevrolet cars and trucks, they also are found in race cars past and present, including Lance Reventlow's Scarabs, Roger Penske's Sunoco Camaros, Corvette Challenge cars, Bruce McLaren's Can Am racers, and thundering NASCAR stockers.
While there are many books on Chevrolet cars, this is the first book on the history and development of the Chevy small-block V-8 engine.
Historical photos from inside Chevrolet's test facilities chronicle the engine's early development. Colorful photography of cars powered by small-block V-8s takes the story from the test center to the street. Among the featured cars are a 1956 Bel Air, Corvettes from 1955 through 1990, standard and Z/28 Camaros, a 1970 Yenko Deuce Nova LT 1, a 1966 Chevy II Nova, Chaparral and Cheetah racers, and Iso Grifos from Italy.
