ABOUT
 From the Author
This small book grew out of my frustration in having modifications done to my cars, or doing modifications myself, that actually proved to be worthless.

What was going on - why didn't that bigger exhaust give me any more performance? Why did that oil additive seem to make no difference? Why did I have to pay for dyno testing all the time - only to find that the performance gains were minor?

I resolved to find ways of testing every modification I was making to my cars. And then subsequently, to work out what modifications were actually needed - that is, areas where improvements would do the most.

I worked out how to test the flow of intake systems, measuring their performance on the road and under real-world conditions. I still remember the first time I did this, using a manometer I'd made myself at basically zero cost. The intake system of the car flowed terribly at high loads - and so when I modified it for better flow, the car's performance increase was dramatic.

I started directly measuring the back-pressure in exhaust systems, letting me see whether it was worthwhile actually replacing the exhaust. And if the exhaust was then replaced, whether the flow was actually better than before.

I did stopwatch testing on the road, and found that oftentimes the gains were much more minor than I'd felt from behind the wheel!

I then did acceleration testing - measuring actual instantaneous acceleration with a cheap accelerometer - and discovered you could easily plot the shape of the engine's torque curve without paying a cent for dyno time. You could even see where in the engine rev range improvements were being made - and where they were not.

This book uses techniques that are cheap, achievable and accurate. The techniques show you what is happening on the road, under real-life driving conditions. You will save the purchase price of the book the very first time you make a modification decision based on real-world testing of what is working and what is not, or make an informed decision about where the greatest need for modification actually is.
